Reality is Optional Kids Writing Club Started our second meeting of the year exploring the world of radio plays. We based our twisted tales off of the dark podcast Welcome To Night Vale, creating insane worlds based around our dream RIO building, with sinister figures lurking around every corner. We are all looking forward to dead authors night. Dr. Seuss will be joining us, of course, that is after we bring him back from the dead. Next meeting, we have one of our members, Mary Innes, leading strange writing prompts night. I wonder what we will create. We have a new mortal to play with (ahem, a new member), and all of us are quite content with our new toy. As you can tell, we are quite busy. Visit our new RIO TV station to see/hear our radio plays https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCm7neh_rJh-eN2OeSenjnPQ You can check out our inspiration, Welcome To Night Vale at http://commonplacebooks.com/welcome-to-night-vale/

The first meeting of the fourth year of Reality Is Optional kid’s writing club (RIO) at the Alexandra Writers’ Centre Society this year at was just about as uneventful as a flying walrus. And as very boring as that sounds, flying walruses are rare, believe it or not. Our night started with lots of new victims, I mean members. Yeah, Meembersss. On a scale of weird, I would say it was at carnivorous giraffe level. So it started at about carnivorous giraffe level and ended on flying walrus level. Which sounds less crazy, but believe me, it’s ten times more insane. We have also captured, I mean contacted Kris Demeanor, the Poet Laureate of Calgary and MJ Diva local musician, singer, and drama teacher. They will be coming into RIO in November. We have also decided on our dead author for Dead Author’s Night. We shall resurrect Doctor Seuss this October. Our plot to take over the world is in progress, and we not only have Canada under our control, But we have also colonized America as well. Soon the world will be ours and everyone will be forced to listen to our theme song. You should hide your children while you can. So, over all, this meeting was average for our kids’ writing club. If you want to join us, or see what we get up to, check out our website at www.realityisoptional.weebly.com.
This article has been brought to you by The Company. Because there is nothing wrong with you that we can’t fix. Article by Emily Firmston Hi RIO fans,
While some of us are back from WordsWorth - the world's best writing camp - EVER - another RIOite is just leaving for the week two adventures. WordsWorth is a place where writing grows, death polo happens, and one can run around the forest waving swords and screaming. WordsWorth is not a place for sleep, writer's block, or mundane normality. We had fun. RIO loves WordsWorth. In fact we love it so much that our next E-Zine will be dedicated to it - so stay tuned and check back in on August 1st. But for now - you can look at pictures of our adventures here: http://youngalbertawriters.com/blog/ It's been a while since I've done a RIO Vlog (Vampire Blog - for those of you not in the know, not video blog). I've published two books, made a giant website (www.boiledcat.com), and had a book launch. All through it I haven't missed editing an E-Zine. Not once. I have however let the contests and camps and classes pages slip. Sorry about that. It's all updated now, so check out the excelent summer camps that are out there for young writers. There's some good ones.
I must say, I'm always impressed by what my young writers pass to me - mostly willingly. They are really good with their words. They are agile not only on paper but also in front of a camera, or just gabbing. It inspires me to be around them. I know that the writers who come after me will be as good or better than I am. But it's worth being humbled twice a month, if only to be around these spark-filled minds. So enjoy our month's latest E-Zine. We have done more. Infomercials to be exact. But they need some editing and I'm still recovering from the heady flight into my four book published status. So next E-Zine you'll get to see them. Trust me, it will be worth the wait. Until then, happy reading! Calling all kid writers - new contests are now up on the RIO website. Also, for your writing pleasure, there is also a new place to submit your work. AND for those not totally impressed yet - there are youth writers' retreats, camps and classes posted too. Check it all out in your RIO Resources.
Drink the Wild Air - youth writing retreat
Come join us at the WordsWorth Winter Retreat! March 1-3 at Camp Chief Hector. Why there, you ask? “Nature has no outline. Imagination has” William Blake March 1-3 we’re heading back to the mountains for another Creative Writing Re-treat and of course, we hope you’ll be there! But why do we keep bringing our writing to the outdoors?William Carlos Williams said things close to the nose aren’t proper subjects. Not all writing can be direct self-expression. Looking inward can keep poets and writ-ers from looking outward. And so we’re taking you outdoors this time to Camp Chief Hector to partner with the outdoor staff to notice evocative new images and to have fresh adventure. And then we’ll create time to take these new images and experiences ...and collaborate them with language. So even if you already have a relationship with the natural world, this one will be new.The locale of the happening always colours the happening, and often, to a degree, shapes it novelist Elizabeth Brown observed. So join us and DRINK THE WILD AIR March 1 – 3, 2013 at Camp Chief Hector YMCA in Kananaskis, Alberta. Thaw your brainfreeze with warm words and we hope you will find an unexpected connection between the outdoors and words. To register or click here: http://drinkthewildair2013.eventbrite.ca/ We will be outdoors, indoors writing, up late writing under the stars, sleeping late -ish. There will be campfire, music, parlour games, Exquisite Corpse Games...the fun will never end. Oh, yes it will. On Sunday just after lunch. But in true Words-worth fashion, we will pack the fun in. We’re even offering a bus out on the Friday night. Happy New Lilly! Yes, RIO has named yet another year. Why? To prevent the world ending of course. It's what we do. Well . . . that and writing really weird stuff, shooting insane commercials, and making strange movies. We're those people. You know, the one's your mother warned you about. Writers. So if you're one of those people too, and you're under eighteen years old, come and join the party. Just go to our home page for more info.
We've been having lots of fun at RIO. We've done our make up (okay, it might have been horror make-up but whatever). We've played with poetry in Space. And now we're going to be learning from RIOites themselves, because that's what we're about. Kid's learning and sharing and exploring with each other. There is no minimum age because age isn't what it's about. It's about being amazing no matter how many years you've been on the planet.
Check out one of our amazing members here: http://www.youtube.com/user/MrsPeaceItOut/videos?flow=grid&view=0 Emma Jones, promoting peace and human rights. I had a great time at the We Should Know Each Other #100. Olive, Emily, Alexis, and myself met all kinds of great kids, shot some fun commercials (see our new E-Zine), and most importantly ate mini-doughnuts. We explored the space and I got to scare Olive, which was pretty sweet. For some reason she didn't seem to appriciate it. Go figure. The night was ended with a game of D&D. A wonderful day. I'm looking forward to hanging out with all my RIO friends again once Thanksgiving is over. But until then - TURKEY!!
Fall is just around the corner. It's time for school (Boo!) and after school activities (Yay!). RIO has a few choices for you. Not only do we have our awesome and insane writing club but we also have DramAntics drama classes and Write This writing class. And if these don't work for you - you can also check out other classes and clubs, markets to submit to, or contests to enter. There is so much to do this fall. Check it out!
