HUTCH KIDS' MAGAZINE
Next deadline Nov 15, 2021
We consider work submitted by children in grades 1st through 8th, and collaborate with elementary and middle school teachers, as well as parents nationwide, sometimes discussing ideas for their students and if desired, offer specific ‘Special Assignments’. If accepted, your child will be contacted through your email address by our editor within 2 months following submission deadline.
There are no costs involved in submitting work, and we do not offer compensation for published works.
All submissions need to have a parent or guardian complete a Parent Consent and Media Release form in order to be considered for publication.
We are not able to inform kids whose work is not accepted, but encourage them to try again.
Submissions do not need to be related to current theme in order to be considered for publication. Violent or destructive content will not be considered.

Kintsugi is a Japanese artform that involves mending broken pottery with golden lacquer. As part of the artform, breakage and repair are not considered imperfections to conceal but are rather embraced as part of the object's history.
In the last year and a half, all our lives have been upended. The pandemic has created cracks in our lives, both big and small. As we move towards a path of recovery, what will our journey look like? What stories do we need most as we begin our path to healing?
Inspire Teen Reads 2021 presents this year's theme: Healing.
Our 6th Annual Book Pitch Competition invites youth aged 12-18 to enter our two categories: The Book Pitch category, and The Book Jacket Design category.
The Book Pitch category invites contestants to convince a panel of judges to read their favourite book in 5 minutes. New to this year is the Book Jacket Design category, in which young people nationwide are invited to redesign a book jacket for their favourite book. Finalists from both categories will be invited to present their pitches and creations to a panel of esteemed authors at The Word On The Street’s online festival, where 3 winners will be chosen from both categories.
Deadline Extended! - August 15

$1000 for one outstanding short story
Sponsored by the St Jerome’s University English Department
Deadline: May 28, 2021
This contest honours distinguished St Jerome’s University lecturer, Peter Hinchcliffe, who was instrumental in founding The New Quarterly and who served for many years as co-editor. Nick Blatchford Occasional Verse Contest
$1000 for one glorious poem
Deadline: February 28, 2022
Sponsored by former The New Quarterly editor Kim Jernigan and family in celebration of her father, Nick Blatchford, of the man who sparked the family’s love of poetry. This contest is for poems written in response to an existing occasion, personal or public, or poems that make an occasion of something ordinary or by virtue of the poet’s attention. We are interested in light verse and in verse more sober, in the whole spectrum of tones and occasions. One of Nick’s own poems, which we think captures the broadness of his (and our) sense of occasion, is pictured below. It originally appeared in Issue 100 of The New Quarterly.
Edna Staebler Personal Essay Contest
$1000 for one winning personal essay
Deadline: March 28, 2022
Edna Staebler was a pioneer in the field of literary journalism and a beloved figure in her (our) home region of Waterloo, Ontario. Her first article, “Duellists of the Deep,” a story about swordfishing with Neil’s Harbour fishermen, and published in Macleans when she was in her forties, won the Canadian Womens Press Club Memorial Award. Edna went on to publish with Macleans, Chatelaine, Saturday Night, and other flagship magazines, while her books include the Food that Really Schmecks series—cookbooks so entertaining that people read them in bed. Edna led by example in other ways as well, founding eponymous writers’ awards, scholarships, and bursaries to nurture writers. She helped to found The New Quarterly in 1981, and in 2005 her generous bequest allowed us to establish this award, in her honour.

The Wildfire National Playwriting Competition
What is it?
We are looking for playwrights 30 years of age or under to submit fresh, young scripts that embrace risk, grit and innovation. Submitting a play to the competition is free and the two winning scripts selected by our jury receive a cash prize, a development workshop*, and a staged reading* at MMMC’s Wildfire Showcase in association with Sage Theatre’s IGNITE! Festival.
*How workshops and readings are run is dependent on current COVID restrictions
What kind of cash prize? This year we will be awarding the first-place playwright $750 and the runner up a prize of $250.
Why do this competition? We are a scrappy little company that believes the conversation between young theatre artists is vital in order for fresh, exciting theatre to continue in this country.
Over the five years the competition has run we have been able to award over $5,500 to young playwrights across the country as well as stage seven workshop readings of winning plays.
We have kept this competition free to make it more accessible to playwrights from all backgrounds and stages of their career.
All six years of these awards have been solely funded by house parties, online crowd sourcing, and the support of the Sage Theatre.
To support this year’s competition, make a donation to our gofundme page.
Thank you to everyone who has helped support Wildfire over the years, we quite literally couldn't do it without you.
