and other stories
After traveling the world (the world being France) Dylan is now back among the Canadians. Here is his last blog from his expedition.
Blog # 5 by Dylan Curle

MORNING MONSTER by Andrew Finch
The scrape of claws as they scratch against stone,
A great gaping mouth, a low, haunting moan.
Giant reaching tentacles, slimy tips bristling with spines,
More eyes than one can count, how they glisten, how they shine.
Colossal black wings, stretching through the sky,
Blotting out the sun, screaming as they fly.
As this abomination pulls its twisted form on thousands of grotesque legs,
Its moist skin glistens with tumors, the smallest the size of eggs.
I stare at this horror of horrors, I can’t believe what I see,
The monster assaulting my eyes through the mirror, before my morning coffee.

Colorless - A short story by Breanna Sieracki AKA Wolfy
No
one really knows how we got here. Everything was normal the day everything fell
apart. People crowded the streets yelling from one end to the other until one
day it just stopped. The world I grew up in and the world I knew all my life
seemed to become nothing more than the dream.
They came like a storm, turning everything in my world painted in color, into colorless shades of grey. Their vehicles roared like thunder as they enter my street. We all rushed into our homes within the minute not wanting to get into their way and stayed there for many days. No one really knows who they are but they made one rule perfectly clear; don’t get in their way no matter the circumstances.
Sometimes I think we do know who they are but my parents are not telling me for a reason I am unsure of even to this day.
My family and I stayed home for many days not daring to leave the safety and comfort of our small home. If it is one thing we knew it was that we could not stay there forever, at some point one of us would have to go out and collect some supplies to keep us here for more days to follow.
Ever since they came everything seemed to stay grey and dark, sometimes it rained as if the sky was weeping at the sight of them invading. Sometimes it thunders, but soon I start it get that sick feeling they were gun shots.
During the night I awake to loud sounds coming from outside, not gun shots. This time whenever I heard them I could feel the earth shake beneath me. It continued for hours until early the next morning it stopped. By the time they finished the sun was just starting to bleed into the streets. I go over to the window to get a visual of what they have been doing all night, when I peak through the glass I see a huge cement wall cutting us off between us and them.
My family looks over my shoulder to see what I was looking at. “They're putting up the wall like they did in Norm” I hear my father say from behind me. “That’s what your uncle told me when they invaded his area to. No one knows what they are up to. But whatever it is I don’t think we want to find out”
I looked back at my father. “What happens when the wall is up and completed?” I turn my head to the side curious if he knows the answer.
“Your uncle told me they were able to leave their homes again without having to be worried of getting shot on sight.” He says with a deep grim ominous tone. “As long as we do not go near the wall or make eye contact we should be okay.”
I nodded
“When will we know when the wall is completed?” I hear my younger sister chirp, he eyes wide is curiosity and fear.
My father shrugged. “I wish I could tell you, your uncle didn't tell me what to look for. I guess whenever we don’t hear them drop the walls onto the ground anymore. Even once it has stopped none of you are allowed to leave the house until me and your mother has scoped out the area to make sure there is no danger.” He gives us a long cold look. “You understand?”
“Yes father.” We all say this at once in sequence, these were one of the first words we learned in our lives as young children. If we ever broke this promise, we would most likely get beaten; there was never a time where we walked out without huge bruises on our face. Sometimes we got away from it though, but it was very rarely, and it depended on what rule or promise we had broken.
The day continues on in silence, ever since the walls came up the streets seemed to lose more and more of their lush bright color by the second, fading into the dim sunlight that appeared from time to time. As I watch the window I could swear the dull grey clouds seem to break apart showing tiny streaks of bright sunlight that seemed foreign to me. But maybe it could have been my imagination.
I hear my door open and my sister come in saying “Finn is here” before exiting again.
I look back at her before getting up and walking out my small room before seeing Finn standing in the entrance with a soccer ball in his hand. At first I am confused on why he brought it but then I finally get an idea on why he wants my presence.
I walk over to the door and greet him before asking in a low voice just in case my father could hear from the other room reading the paper that was surprisingly delivered today. “What are you doing here?”
“I was wondering if you want to play, everyone is too chicken to. So I came to you, I know you will!” he says with a smile while giving me a sad innocent puppy looks so he can get me into playing with him.
I quickly usher him outside not wanting to take any chances of my father seeing the soccer ball in Finn’s hand before shutting the door behind me. “Really, you want to play now, with them prowling around?!”
“Oh come on Alex, I thought you were more fun than that. Since when did danger ever stop you, remember going into that cage with the hungry tiger that once time? You had a better chance of being eaten by that then getting shot at!”
I cross my arms not wanting to give in easy; I was not the one to back out of challenges in order to have some kind of fun and enjoyment. But, is this really worth it? What if I got caught then what, I don’t think I want to see how angry father would be if he found out.
“Come on Alex, you in or out?”
I don’t say anything I just bite my lip trying to make a three second decision.
Finn then shrugs “okay then, I see how it is I guess I’m going to go play by myself, alone.” He turns and begins to walk off cradling the ball “ALONE. Last chance” He then throws the ball at me with a light throw making me able to catch it easy in the palm of my hands.
I look at the ball before I throw it back to him “fine, but you owe me one”
He smiles before running off down the street where we usually played in the street with the other kids.
We run for a few blocks before we hit a clearing that was usually crowded with people, it's now deserted without a soul to be seen for miles. When I scan the area I notice the wall cutting off the huge street making it smaller than it was once before. Huge gray cement walls stand before us with one opening. I try to swallow the lump in my throat that does not seem to go away ever since we entered this area.
“We can use this for the goal!” Finn explains gesturing to the white metal bars rising up from the dirt covered ground “I’ll be the goalie”
I turn to Finn wanting to take my attention away from the potential danger that may be looming over the horizon.
We play a couple games and as we play I swear I see the world around me brighten into the colors that use to surround me. The echoes and cheers that have once surrounded me weeks ago are now back, I race around through the people that once were here cheering or telling us to watch where we were going. I attempt to score to continue this feeling but Finn knocks it away, I attempt to get the ball back into my position but I am not fast enough and is bounces right past me and over to the wall.
My heart fills with fear as I race after the ball over to the wall; I can’t help but spot a lone guard guarding the entrance to the other side look at of the wall as I race helplessly after the ball.
The ball stops just as it reached the wall barely touching its surface. I grab it quickly preparing myself to be showered in bullets for going near the wall, but what I expect does not happen. I open my eyes to see the guard turned the other way; I stare for a minute before I race back to Finn with fear and confusion.
Right after that we leave and return home just as the sun started to set leaving the streets into a bright pale orange, a color I have not seen ever since they came and took over.
